Plastic Tab Sticking off 2012 Rocker Molding

Here's a question for the well informed. There is a flat piece of plastic that extends inward on the Rear of each Rocker Molding for about 6 or 7 inches ahead of the rear wheels on my 2012 V6 Performance Package. Does anyone know what the purpose of this piece is?

I asked the dealership and they have no idea. Ford told me to ask the dealership so go figure. I would really like to know, especially since winter is here and I would like to know how important it is if it gets broken off from snow or ice and I have to replace it. Thanks.

Post a pic up and someone should be able to answer your question. Sounds like maybe a wind or debris deflector.

That's what I'm thinking, but I'd like to know for sure. I'll post a picture tomorrow as it's dark here now and miserable out. I noticed you have a 2013, do you have the same tabs?

I know exactly what you're talking about, mine has that as well, but I have no idea what it's purpose is. i thought it was there to shield something, somehow??

Somebody take a pic! Now I'm curious what you're talking about.

I'm not sure, I'll check when I get home from work. The 2013 has painted rockers so it may be different.

How about a mounting place for splash guards?

No, It's ahead of the rear wheels. I already have splash guards.

I know some of the Ford SUVs have a similar type of thing to help the aero for fuel economy ... so that might be its purpose on the Mustang as well.

cheers

Weird........... LOL!
Ford likes to do weird stuff like this ..... :?

CaptVirgilHilts 12-09-2012 09:44 AM

My first guess would be a "drip edge" a place that water collects to be shed in one spot as it flows along the rocker in the slip stream.

I also asked the same question in another forum and someone from Ford Customer service answered the question. I hope this clarifies it for everyone.

"Hello totaljustice,

What you’re referring to, is a stone guard/cuff. It’s used to help prevent damage from road debris being kicked up by the tires. I hope this helps.

^^^ Well, I guess this wraps things up. ;)

1low03gt 12-09-2012 07:10 PM

Would make sence, but why wouldn't cover a little more of the area of the body that is wrapped around into the wheel openning?

DublDee 12-10-2012 11:23 AM

^^ My thoughts exactly...

GrampsV6 12-10-2012 07:54 PM

That is what it is for...I hope it works. My 2000 Pontiac Grandam GT has the rocker mouldings and the bottom of it by the wheel well has no paint left on it from rocks and sand being kicked up from the tires and bouncing off the rocker panels. Obviously Ford is smarter!:tup

Anyone know how these are attached. I have one that was knocked out of place. Not sure how it happened but I want to put it back to its proper alignment

My guess would be a couple push pins

If they are taken out can they be put back in?

If they are push pins yes they are easily replaceable. I'll try to take a closer look at mine tomorrow.
