First off you need to tell us what Mustang you like the most?
79-93 FOX 5.0L
94-95 SN95 5.0L 96-98 4.6L
99-04 EDGE 4.6L
05-UP S197 4.6L

Then you need to decide if you want a 5.0L or a 4.6L
Then you need to tell us if you want to buy a V6, GT, Cobra, Saleen, etc...

Well In my opinion it's a personal opinion thing They all have they're advantages and possibly even a disadvantage or two. As far as newer or older, with a budget of 13,000 you shouldn't rule out older models just on age. If you like the style of the newer models then that's a different story but you can still get 5.0 Fox Bodies from the 80's that look like they just rolled out of the show room with very low mileage for well under 13 and you would probably have enough left over to start some pretty nice upgrades, or you could just go straight for a newer model pay a little more to start with and worry about upgrades later if you decide you need any. i wouldn't look for anything seriously modified though for your very first mustang. For one thing they usually reduce reliability if not properly maintained and operated and two if your not use to strong torque a stock mustang will give you plenty for a first lesson. I've seen many rich kids go out and buy a supercharged cobra and I'm sure they must **** there Calvins when they launch it over a guard rail like a bad Dukes of Hazard stunt. I would start by going through Mustang websites etc. and get more familiar with the different body styles and decide witch one really excites you first then at least you'll have a base to start from. After that for a first Mustang i would suggest something as low mileage and unmolested as you can afford. Hope this helps and I'm sure once you decide on your model then you'll find model specific suggestions alot more plentiful as mustangs in general is a pretty wide topic

Work from the inside out. From my experience, and I’m sure other would agree, the gains from basic bolt on upgrades to a v6 are slim to none. It makes much more sense from a financial outlook as well as a performance outlook to first build a good base to have fun with.
