Water in interior

I recently spent a rainy weekend driving to vancouver and back and when I got home I reached behind the passenger seat and lo and behold the carpet is just soaked.Took a towel and hair dryer and a wet dry vacuuming to get all the moisture, now I have a coupe so no leakage there but anybody have a clue where the hell this water came from, windows are still sealing as well.

VAEM 04-07-2014 09:36 PM

My '97 does this. I've never been able to figure it out.

Give us more details. Convertible? Spoiler? Any mods? Trunk seals in place?

puroman60 04-07-2014 09:49 PM

Yeah it's a 2013 coupe with a factory spoiler did actually check the seals plus did dislodge some tree droppings even checked the window seals on the quarter windows and they seem to fine now is coming from underneath I don't know but if it happens again off to the dealer and see if there's a crack in the body underneath or has a plug or something like that come out

def67 04-07-2014 10:01 PM

Is the water on the front carpet as well? It probably has the water leak that is common to the s197's.
If you pop the hood and look up by the firewall you will find 2 rubber gromet things that are probably plugged, the same thing happened to my stang being I park it outside all the time and they got plugged with leaf stuff. I just pulled them out and could not believe how much water came out of there. I'll try to find a pic.

def67 04-07-2014 10:06 PM

Check out this thread, the first post has pics (although not the greatest), I can't believe ford hasn't fixxed this problem after 15 years!

puroman60 04-07-2014 10:07 PM

No the fronts seem to be fine plus it's only on the passenger side thanks for the tip on the grommets on the firewall I will check that in the morning won't hurt to check are they on the upper or lower part of the firewall

VAEM 04-07-2014 10:10 PM

Thanks def67. Learn something new every day.

def67 04-07-2014 10:10 PM

Upper.

puroman60 04-07-2014 10:12 PM

Well I'll be damned it makes total sense many thanks will check it the morning

def67 04-08-2014 09:21 PM

Well?

puroman60 04-08-2014 09:35 PM

Nothing no water a little bit of gunk do you know could there be anything underneath such as a drain plug or grommet that could be missing?I'm going to drop by local dealership and ask the service mgr if he can bring up on the computer than have put it up on a hoist and check it out. Also I get a strong exhaust smell while car is warming up it does go away but again do I have something missing underneath.

def67 04-09-2014 07:50 AM

Well I'm stumped then, sorry.

shakin 04-10-2014 03:41 PM

Here is link to pics of the underside of a 2012. There does appear to be one or 2 plugs in that area, so perhaps one is missing or not properly installed in the hole.

Hope you find the root cause, and make sure you keep the carpet dry afterwards.

It seen awhile but it appears my problem has been solved,I had a seam on the bottom and up the back of the floor pan that was not sealed completely. The water was seeping through the seam and running along the wiring harness up to the front kick panel on the passenger side.Dealer had to tear out interior, carpets included and smoke the interior to find the leak,at least inside pan was cleaned carpets were fully cleaned any mildew issues were taken care seats were cleaned but damn it was gone for two weeks I missed my car.Within minutes of picking it up I was well no other way to put foot to the floor accelerating on to the inland island highway quick burst to 150kph and I felt a hell of a lot better

puroman1 05-20-2014 11:03 PM

When I took out my trunk liner in my 2013
in order to undercoat it,there was two
threaded bolt holes in my trunk that where
not sealed up.

You could see the ground below.I was really
surprised and sealed these up so no water
could get in.

You might want to get under and have a look
with a light.I was not impressed with these
open spots.

def67 05-20-2014 11:11 PM

Are you two puromen related?

puroman60 05-21-2014 08:21 PM

This seems a little unusual to have similar user names and no we're not related at all be careful here folks

I thought it was funny too, not a common username lol.

Patroller 06-18-2014 10:10 PM

As def says, its probably the typical water leak with S197s.

Ford has a TSB on it, #68 (7 posts down on this page) of a few different possibilities:

S197 Mustang TSB List - Page 5 - Ford Mustang Forums

Edit: Ah, skipped page 2. Glad to hear you got it fixed.

puroman60 06-18-2014 10:55 PM

well guess what they didnt get the leak fixed on the first go around after the first mild rainfall I had water in the same spot but just not the same amount so back to the dealership and they tore the interior apart again smoked the interior again and lo and behold smoke coming out in almost the same place. My thinking is dealership didn't smoke the interior like they said just ran water over car like it was raining found a spot then said good enough well it wasn't,hasn't rained since so we'll see once it rains but guaranteed it's not going back to that dealership.Tell me people should it matter where you got your ford product and where you get it worked on?First thing that was mentioned to me at this dealership was you didn't buy this car from them.WTH tome it dosn't matter. What they don't realize I did try to buy from them they didn't have the car couldn't find one the way I wanted it and when it came to a factory order it was $11 grand more than what I got this car for plus all the other goodies such as finance and trade in I couldn't say no but these guys are not thrilled with me.I live in a isolated town on the west coast we have one ford dealership unfortunately but i really don't want to deal with them but Vancouver is 5 hours and two ferry rides away so the costs will add up but the road there is freakin blast

puroman60 08-04-2014 12:46 PM

Well here we go again 1 rainstorm in the past month and guess what go start the car up and have a low tire pressure flash on the dash go check tires were fine and dandy get back in the car close the doors buy now I have a door open warning wth drive away now have e brake warning still flashing but my e brake is off try and turn on radio, aircon etc and my center console is not working at all but car is running just fine.Go to the dealer before work and lo and behold there is water coming down the kick panel on driver side.Service guy jokes and says at least it's not underneath the carpet where it was before than proceeds to put his hand there and it comes up absolutely soaking lost the car for at least 3 weeks and the weather has been perfect.Jeez the water has now gone into the main computer junction box in behind the kick panel and basically fried it I at a lost for words and the dealership it still trying to blame the new shifter that I had installed so they can void the warranty I hope this time they fix it and don't damage the car like they did the last time.Yeah they scratched trim the alum on the steering wheel and scuffed the paint plus gouged the plastic trim along the bottom of the seat had to go to ford and not the dealership to get these thing repaired damn the car is great I love it but this other dealership is killing me

DublDee 08-05-2014 11:20 AM

If it was me I would call my insurance company and tell them to write the car off. If that doesn't work, insist that the dealership either give you your money back, or replace the car with another car that you will be happy with. If that doesn't work, your last call should be to a place called CAMVAP, and it might not be a bad idea to make the dealership aware of the fact that you are going to contact them. I had a similar issue with a car quite a few years ago, and once CAMVAP was involved the dealership replaced the car with another off of their lot, and all was good. When you pay a good amount of money for a vehicle, you must get an equal amount of use out of that vehicle, and if it constantly in the shop for a repeat problem, you are NOT getting the use out of the vehicle that you paid for. Check it out, you wont be disappointed

Ohtobbad 08-05-2014 12:51 PM

I just realized your car is a 2013 gt. I would be coming unhinged.
this should not be happening to a new car unless it was in an accident.
I agree with DublDee. don't put up with their crap.

puroman60 08-05-2014 09:25 PM

Thanks dubldee for the advice I've lost the car now for a total of 6 weeks since march.I understand water leaks can be hard to find and I accept that. It's the some of the comments I'm getting from the dealership that is pissing me off, they are really pushing the fact the I installed another shifter and try to prove that the boot is leaking so they can void the warranty but I keep telling them there is now a heat shield underneath sealing the bottom of the interior off and really how much water can really get through there. They have noted that I didn't buy the car their as well.I know that I will get a online survey sent to me from ford again so this time I will not be so kind and I will request a new car and mention the above info. But jesus what I really want is my car back I love it

Apocalypse Pony 08-06-2014 03:40 AM

Stupid question, but why wouldn't you go back to the dealer your bought the car from? Shouldn't matter anyway, last time I checked, Ford warranty is not dealer specific, those dopes should come good for it whether you bought it there or not. No surprise they're playing the aftermarket shifter issue, they probably see an out.

def67 08-06-2014 09:32 AM

Did you ever check the little inserts that I linked, or pull them out? If it fried your computer then I really think that is where the water is getting in.

If the water damage was enough to fry the computer, then trust me, you don't want that car back! Electrical issues can quite easily be a lifelong problem in a vehicle and they only get worse.

def67 08-06-2014 02:35 PM

True that DD, just wandering cause its very similar to other stories I've read about it.

puroman60 08-06-2014 09:17 PM

So to answer some questions the main reason I'm not taking the car back to the dealer I bought it at is because its 700km away.I live about 100k north ofVancouver it takes me 4 to 5 hours alone to get to van(2 ferries 70k of twisty 2 lane).I know the ferry sucks but the road is just effing wonderful if u know what I mean. Then its about 600k or 5 hours. The big issue is just the cost since there is no planes that fly out of salmon arm.And yes it dosn't matter where you bought your car a ford is ford it gets fixed at any dealership.I just figure all the problems I've had is just from lack of finding that one leak in the front of the car.I have mentioned more than once to two different service managers about the grommets on the firewall looked myself and they seemed fine ask them twice to pull them and confirm and was told they had been done but Im starting to not believe them now.If there are anymore electrical issues after this episode I will then contact ford about a buyback or go to camvap.

def67 08-07-2014 11:24 AM

I would pull the grommets myself and leave them out, they are there in cas of an exhaust leak to keep the exhaust out of the cabin. If the exhaust leaks I'm sure it you would notice right away anyway.
Then I would make them install a new computer and wiring harness, if not you will probably have gremlins for as long as you have the car.

Ohtobbad 08-07-2014 01:49 PM

I will give you credit, you have a hellva a lot more patience than I do.
I would have one of them by the throat at this point :)

puroman60 08-07-2014 09:55 PM

it's hard to keep my cool but I've learned over the years not burn any bridges and don't turn it personal it really does help.I also do business with the local ford dealership so I have to keep it sane.My thought is get that leak fixed replace that computer junction box and we should be fine but if anything else electrical acts up then it's straight to ford first than elsewhere but first give them a chance

Ohtobbad 08-08-2014 04:36 AM

It might be wise to document, date & record everything, also send a copy of this to ford
Canada. I suspect, if this dealer has this attitude you are not going to be done for awhile.

puroman60 08-08-2014 08:38 PM

oh you bet I've kept everything. One thing that is starting to irritate me is a lack of communication from the dealership. They worked on the car this past Tuesday but I haven't heard from them,at least say ok we got the leak now we need the junction box and go through a checklist to make sure it's fine just let me know wth is going on

puroman60 08-23-2014 10:08 PM

Well after three weeks of not hearing from either of the dealerships in regards to my car on thursday morning I get a call from my5 ton driver on the local ferry from vancouver island saying my car was onboard. Can you believe it they didn't/wouldn't tell me my car is fixed.Just glad to have it back and everything that was damaged (junction box, floor mats, carpet were replaced and repaired, ford figured out that since I park on little bit of a downhill slope that maybe if they did the same they might find the leak, yeahthey found it instantly.Still don't know where but will find out monday when usual sevice manager is back. But how's this for a heart attack went out today for a drive and halfway through my low tire pressure light comes on.First thought was here we go again that the problem hasn't been fixed, tires looked fine but when I finally got home took my tire gauge out and damn I've got a small nail in one tire and the pressure was about 10 pounds lower than others so off to a local garage and put air in witha big sigh of relief that damn light went out.Crikey I had built myself up into a froth now it's off to the tire place but thats a lot less stressful. After only having this car back a couple of days I'm still not getting rid of it damn I love this mustang but not the dealership

Apocalypse Pony 08-24-2014 06:35 AM

Nice to hear some good news, hopefully that's the end of the troubles with your ride.

DublDee 08-24-2014 09:55 AM

Glad she's all fixed up!
