New rear gears
I'm thinking I want to get new gears for a little more get-up and go. I'm thinking 3.73s would be good. Right now I turn about 1600-1700 RPMs at highway speeds. How much of a jump will 3.73s bring at highway speeds?
Anyone have 3.73s? Do you like them? Also, does it matter what brand I go with, cause I want quality gears but don't want to lighten the wallet too much. |
I did 3.73's,and they lasted me a season,then i went to 4.10's,and been happy since.
The 4.6 needs the 4.10,3.73's i thought personnally weren't enough (as many others who have done both aswell.....do a web wide search on modular sites :wink:). They have no bottm end torque,so the gear is what makes up that difference.:tup Stick with Ford Racing gears.:) |

I'd also suggest 4:10's and frpp ones, lots of others seem to be noisy. What are your gears right now? I think there is no point if you don't make ATLEAST 2 jumps. IE 3:55 to 3:73 = pointless. 3:55 to 3:93 atleast. BUT it seems 3:93's tend to be noisy too. I guarantee you will LOVE 4:10's for the improved fun factor, especially if you have 3:55's or less now. Your gas mileage will of course go down but I think the main reason most people get the drops they do is because it's so much more fun down low they are stomping on it more. :laughhard It depends how much highway driving you do too. If you mostly just put around town I wouldn't hesitate as you can still keep the rpms really low. If you do tons of highway driving you will definently notice the difference. For me it's not bad if I keep her at 110-120k. (i can still get 25mpg with all my crap)

I got 3.73's in a 94 5.0L but since im kickin over 500 whp I should have went with 3.55's
Since your 4.6 you will wanna either do 3.73's or 4.10's |

I did 3.73's in mine.... she hums along quite nicely now....
but I'm doing 1800 - 2000 on the highway now... 4.10s are great if you're running an auto... but not a stick IMO.... makes innercity driving a little to squirrely if you've got a loose driving surface and a heavy foot. |
But you have a pushrod motor where the torque is down low,that is one of the 5.0L's forte :wink:.Modular motors make sh!t for torque down low,more like closer to 3000 grand before we got torque!:banghead: That is why the modular motor family needs a steeper gear.:tup

I'll be honest, I don't know much about the 4.6's.... never really tickled me... mind you... 5.4's... they're just BEASTLY looking... the one that was/still is? sitting in Steeda... humna humna humna!!! |

Very true!But once you get use to it,it really isn't that bad.
The lack of room was scaring me away from doing a header swap.But i am gonna do them,stuck my mind to it.Gonna start by getting a set of long tubes i think,(i do have shorties right now,that is the only confussing part where i think it isn't worth it if i'm dropping the k member),then a K member,and i will go nuts,then have my MAC H pipe modified to fit with some high flow cats,or if the price is right,just buy a high flow catted mid pipe. But a lot of guys do scare away from the 4.6 cause of the lack of room.:confused: |
