quad shock with 275's

Hi all
I recently installed 17" x 10" rear wheels on my 87 coupe and i had to remove the quad shock for them to fit.
has anyone else run into this problem? is there a way to keep the quad shock with this size wheel?

fast Ed 05-27-2012 08:11 PM

Sometimes if you flip the quad shocks end for end, that will give enough clearance.

cheers
Ed

I thought about that while I was trying to install the wheels, it will be really close and i'd have to remove the boot on the shock.
If the wheel will turn freely on the hoist will I have clearance while driving ie: suspention travel?

Why do you want to keep the quad shocks ? Still running stock suspension or for wheel hop issues ? Just askin .

dreo26 07-24-2012 09:56 AM

Yes im still running stock suspention and it feels too soft in the rear, I was told to keep the quad shock because the single shocks were inadequate

borbet 07-25-2012 06:47 PM

Nope ! Thats why we are all here to ask n learn and to help sometimes . How many Kms on said stock suspension ? Might be time to look at new (lowering ?? ) springs and shocks n struts . Lots of price points out there to satisfy .
One more thing Dre , got frame connectors in there ? That could be the soft feeling in your rear .

Just thinking .

dreo26 07-25-2012 07:21 PM

I have 166,000kms on the car, no frame connectors but i put new shocks in the rear.
I havent put connectors in because i was under the impression that with a stock motor it was not needed?

1990Fox 07-26-2012 08:55 PM

I got frame connectors the first day I got my 5.0 in my car

borbet 07-28-2012 07:20 AM

Agree with 1990. Our cars flex in the middle due to the unibody design of the times , todays cars are so far advanced in chassis stiffness. I would recommend frame connectors as a starting point to stiffen the car up and then look at matching struts / shocks / springs at those kms it is time . Then toss quad shocks in thrash can . lol

Do you have any goals for this car ?

dreo26 07-29-2012 01:53 AM

No goals specifically, but im always wanting to do something more!I think i'll look into frame connectors
Thanks

They can be aftermarket or some square or rectangle tubing from a local metal supply house . Most metal supply sell at 20 to 24 foot lengths , some will sell short sections .

Let us know how it is when you get them done .

dreo26 07-30-2012 08:29 PM

Is there a certain way to install these? I know when my car is on the hoist the doors dont close properly, will installing the frame connectors hold the body flexed in that position?

borbet 08-02-2012 07:09 AM

Yes ! They are welded in to each end of the frames with some flatstock brackets to tie welded areas together . Then prime , paint or undercoat as desired.

Your last statment has me concerned .... doors wont close right on a hoist .

How rusty is the bottom of your car ? If and i say if it is not rusty i would be looking very close for rips in the floors sheet metal at all suspension points and where rear seat dogleggs to floor . Power shifting and time with rough roads take its toll on uni - body cars .

This past winter i was doing front sway bar bushings / links and a water pump due to a small leak ....... I found one small rust hole in a rocker along with 3 small rips in the floors sheet metal . Now it has new ceramic hedders exhaust motor mounts aluminum rad electric fan new carpets battery in trunk 3 G rewired with kill switch stereo rewired new speakers sound deadner etc ...... once ya start it can snowball :D
P.S. I have a loving wife . $$$$$$

dreo26 08-05-2012 04:05 PM

The car does not have any rust or a single hole in the floors, I just assembled the car so i am sure of it. when I say they won't close properly I mean not perfectly should I still be concerned? any other spots I should look?

borbet 08-10-2012 04:51 AM

Could be just the way it was on the hoist ??? but again do frame connectors and you will be impressed .
If it still feels soft to you after then look at any wear items that need to be done next . ie struts , bushings etc .

dreo26 08-29-2012 07:54 PM

You may be right about how it was on the hoist because yesterday we had it up on the hoist and the drivers door operated with no trouble.
i have some square tubing and plates, im goung to weld them up as soon as i get some time

borbet 08-30-2012 03:09 PM

Sounds great . Make sure it is level at all four corners and look at all gaps on doors before you mig .
Best darn mod for any fox .

Since you have time , wanna finnish my heater core ?? lol

1990Fox 09-03-2012 01:13 AM

Heater cores are fun to do lol ;) I've done 2 of them so far

dreo26 09-11-2012 07:53 AM

Isnt there a access hatch behind the glovebox?

fast Ed 09-11-2012 12:22 PM

Only on 79-86 non-A/C cars ... with A/C, and all 87-93 require dash removal for access.

cheers
Ed
