Skip Shift Disabled with Tuner???

Ok, so I have a couple of questions here. I have recently heard about these new 6 speed standards in the 2011 and 2012 Mustangs, having a "skip Shift", which will not allow you to shift from 1st to 2nd, or even 3rd for that matter, it goes directly from 1st to 4th!!!! Apparently this is for fuel economy, and I have been told that it will display "1st to 4th for economy" on the dash when this happens.

So my questions are: How do I know if my car has this? I haven't driven it much, just from the dealer to home, and one quick afternoon of cruising. Also, I heard a custom tune will disable this for me, is that true, and if so will it effect my warranty?

^^^ I don't have any experience with the new Mustang. But, I used to play from time to time in a Dodge Viper - if you accelerated too hard if first the tranny wouldn't let you shift into second. You were forced to shift into third - but then the engine would bog. WTF? It was pretty frustrating - especially not being at red line. Although, I think it did improve my shifting.

From what I have read on other forums the skip shift is for the manual trans. The light comes on and it locks out 2nd and 3rd if your revs are too LOW. If you are in the higher rpm you get all the gears. It can be tuned out or there is a wire that can be unplugged off the trans that disables it as well.

Eww, I didn't know Mustangs had this 'feature'. Manual Camaros have been this way since '93. Yuck!

I've driven several and it never did it for me unless I shifter at a really really low rpm. It's not anything to worry about but a tune can get rid of it.

I really doubt it will be an issue for me, as I don't usually shift under 2500 rpm, and from all the research I've done, it sounds like it only does this if you shift out of 1st lower than 2500. Either way I'm going to get a tuner anyway, and will have it disabled.

I still don't understand why it would make you shift into 4th gear if you shifted out of first under 2500 rpm. Shifting into 4th would lower RMP even more and bog the motor. Am I missing something?
