Audio question (Subwoofer boxes)
Guys im having a little bit of a dilemma, I cant decide between a ported box, and a non ported box for two 10" audiobahns I have. They were originally in a ported box, which the previous owner sealed up by putting a block of wood over the ports. They sounded good in the sealed box and I dont know how they sounded in the ported box as I never heard them this way, Anyways what my question is. When do you use a ported box, and when do you use a non ported box? The reason i'm asking as I'd like them to sound as good as possible in my Grand Cherokee and im wondering should I just use the box I already have, or should I purchase a new one. Suggestions please....
They are Audiobahn 300W RMS each and I am using a US AMPS 500W RMS mono block amp to push them. The source is a Alpine CDA9831.

nice amp! ported will get you quite a bit louder as well as more lowend frequency response (if tuned properly). Sealed boxes tend to use more amplifier power and roll off at higher frequencys. what is the model of the subs?

Back when i was into stereo's i bought 2 12" JLW6's. i think the manufacture recommended a small enclosure. I ran 2 RF 501BD amps, one for each.
After talking to a guy, he had me build a 8 cubic foot ported box, and damn they sounded good and hit hard.

Depends on the sub really, some are designed for sealed, b/p, ported or free-air. IMO it's always safe to run a good-size sealed box, but ported usually gives better low-end bass, especially at lower volume.

I have 3 - 12" Audiobahn's and there in a sealed box. They hit pretty hard......Porting it makes the bass travel, not porting it makes it have a hard kick.
I know this from expierance
