I'm no longer using the US Amp, I'm using two MTX 300w RMS'. Future shop had them on for $200 instant rebate $99 each. I think I have decided on a sealed enclosure.

Nick what have you got in the trunk? lol

^^ thats it??? lol

I've got 2 sony 1400w subs powered by a D class Mephis 1000w monoblock.

its teeth chattering.

the difference between ported and sealed is this--

sealed = punchy solid dropping bass. hard hitting -not too low freq. reverberates the outside of the vehicle. - gets lots of vibration and rattles.

ported = low freq, bass drops nicely - sounds stays in the vehicle - allows for greater voice coil movement- some vibration, little rattles

however in both cases, I would suggest investing in a few sq feet of of Dynamat or similar.... it will help cut down rattling, as well as keep more sound in the car.

Sealed- Hard hitting, tight *** bass, less low frequences

Ported- More boomier (harder to control), lower frequences

Sound quality sealed,

hear you for miles ported.

Now having said that I will contradict what I just said, properly tuned ported box can make tight bass. Smaller box with less air and tune ported can make tight bass, the box all depends on the sound you want and the area you have.

I had many different custom boxes made. Back in the day I had 2 MTX blue thunders and only a 40 RMS Alpine amp to run it. Since power was minimal they built a 2.5 cubic foot per sub box with a 5.25 port ....cannot remember the length or port because that also plays a factor. This box in total was 5 cubic feet, a huge box but with only 40 watts it was no big deal. A year passed and I bought a Punch 150 and hooked it up mono so 150 RMS to the subs...OMFG the bass was horrendous(sp?) People could hear me for miles and miles....they could hear me before they could see me. Those Blue Thunders would take what I was thorwing at them. Guys from all around thought I had 15" subs when I really only had 2- 10" subs. It was all the box design.

All I can say is make sure the box is the right size whether ported or not and taylored to the power you will throw at them

I agree with flipmode. Every thing in that post was perfectly said.
The main thing about a stereo is the box!!

Changing a box 4 different times with 4 different boxes gives you 4 different changes of sound.

I'm addicted to ultra small sealed boxes, just sounds so clean and tight. Each of my Infinity 10s has only about .6 cubes each.

It's all listener preference, and the differences have been outlined above.

I don't know about you guys, but a 5 channel amplifier from Soundstream and a ported Box with a 8" L5 Kicker is all I needed to scare Honda's with Futureshop systems.. and that's with a Pioneer deck.. though by running components in the front with 200 Watt door speakers, tweaters in MACH 460 speaker Pods, and 6x9 250 watt soundstream speakers in the back, I've got a concert hall, or Dance club in the car.. LOL.

But the weight in the car is brutal enough that I need new rear shocks due to stupid knocking (I think the weight made the fluid all funny in one rear shock.. 50 lbs of PL glued MDF and Amplier mounted to the underside of the trunk lid can do that

1998 GT Mach 480 amplifier

recently lost the amp that powers the rear sub woofer. I would like to replace it, but Ford doesn't supply it any more (guessing because of the cost, $1200)and I'm hitting brick walls online. I love my Mustang, and want to hold onto it as long as I can.

I am a fan of sealed enclosures. Tight bass, can hit hard. But, if you are into that drowny crazy bass that makes your eyes rattle (seal can do it too), ported is a great way to go.

You may want to look at getting some Aero Ports for the enclosure and get a good company to build you a spec box.

Characteristics of subwoofers that are crucial to performance are power (check for RMS power ratings), sensitivity (higher rating is better), frequency range (versatility), sealed boxes are the best enclosure subwoofers for quality sound, dual voice coil subwoofers give you the most flexibility in terms of setup, size doesn't always mean better sound with subwoofers as lots of factors go into producing top quality bass, and look for an amplifier that matches your subwoofers in power ratings and impedance (4 ohms is the average rating).
