You can jump diagnostic connector terminals on older cars to have it flash the code(s), not on OBD2 as far as I know, you will need to have it scanned.
White_Snake, the reason you shouldn't waste your money on a scanner, is like I said before, it's not a wise investment, chances are you won't get your money out of it, also, it only gives you the codes, it doesn't show live readings, and the codes it gives are generic, it is not detailed like a decent scanner, which costs $4,000+. People think they can save money by buying a code reader, only to come to a shop after wasting money on the code reader, and parts related to the code read, only to have the same problem, and have to still pay me to fix it, after throwing parts at it. But it's your money, do what you want with it.
